Human Trafficking

“Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery involving the illegal trade of people for exploitation or commercial gain.”

Sex Trafficking

“The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act where such an act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age.”

HUMAN TRAFFICKING
  • “Put into perspective, the 21 million victims in forced labor and the more than US$150 billion in illegal profits generated by their work exceeds the population and GDP of many countries or territories around the world.”

  • There are more slaves in today’s world than ever before recorded in history.

THE PROFITS
  • It is estimated that the total yearly profits generated by human trafficking is 150 billion: 99 billion comes from the commercial sex trade.

  • Latest statistics estimate that there are 21-30 million people currently enslaved worldwide each year through human trafficking.

PEOPLE *NOT* PRODUCTS

While any person can be a victim of sex trafficking there are specific groups that are targeted by traffickers because of their vulnerabilities. These include runaway/homeless youth, undocumented immigrants, those living in poverty and oppression, victims of domestic violence/sexual abuse, and those living in areas of conflicts/war. Polaris, Freedom Happens Now (2015)

WHO?
HOW MANY?
  • Of the estimated 27-30 million slaves worldwide; 5.5 are children and 55% are women and girls.

  • The US State Department states that 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders each year.

  • The problem in the Unites States is said to affect 100,000 children each year through pornography or prostitution.

  • Between 14,500 -17,500 human trafficking victims are brought into the the US each year. Sometimes they are lured legally and other times they are smuggled.

THE PHYSICAL TOLL
  • It is estimated that 30,000 victims die each year from abuse, neglect, torture, and disease due to sex trafficking.

  • After becoming a victim of human trafficking the average life span is reduced to only 7 years.

  • The average life span of a child caught in the sex slave trade is two years. They are either beaten to death, contract HIV/AIDS, contract bacterial meningitis, or overdose on drugs forced on them.

THE EMOTIONAL TOLL
  • Survivors of human trafficking experience PTSD, substance abuse, anxiety, depressive states, and dissociative states that can lead to memory loss, and studies show 39-66 percent of survivors experience suicidal thoughts.

  • Researchers have found that mistreatment during childhood actually creates physical changes in the brain that leave the adolescent/adult more vulnerable to depression and anxiety.

  • There are great social repercussions that victims face after being rescued from slavery. Their perceptions of life and society have been supplanted by victimization. They were robbed of a healthy atmosphere in which to grow. Their well being was sacrificed for money and their potential to experience a joyful life was not developed. They will have much to overcome in the restoration process of their lives. This is possible with Jesus Christ.

THE SOCIAL TOLL
  • “Service providers should offer the opportunity for the DMST survivor to have spiritual needs met as well as mental, physical and social health needs”. National Colloquium Report on DMST Residential Programs (2012).

THE SPIRITUAL TOLL
WHERE?
  • The United States is a major consumer of sex trafficking of women girls. It is the second largest destination country in the world; Germany is first.

  • Due to the number of reported traffickers and the number of victims recruited into the sex trade; Toledo ranks top in the nation for human trafficking.
